Course overview

Move up from guiding to teaching with the SSI Open Water Instructor programme in Alor, a remote Indonesian island where reading current is part of the craft. Candidates polish teaching presentations in the calm bays near Kalabahi, then run open-water training sessions on Alor's reefs and macro slopes. You finish certified to teach SSI's core programmes and issue certifications of your own.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver academic, confined-water and open-water teaching presentations the SSI way
• Apply SSI training standards and the digital learning platform
• Demonstrate, evaluate and correct student diving skills to professional standard
• Manage diver risk in Alor's current-prone sites and brief drift entries
• Run a complete training programme to dive-centre standards
• Prepare for the SSI Instructor Training Course evaluations and exam

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Divemaster or equivalent leadership certification from a recognised agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• Logged dives meeting SSI professional requirements (typically 100 for the ITC)
• Valid first-aid and CPR / React Right provider rating
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Orientation to SSI standards and the digital platform, plus your first academic presentations.
2. Day2
   Confined-water workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching core skills in the calm shallows near Kalabahi.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Run open-water teaching circuits on Alor's reefs and macro slopes under evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & risk management

   Cover SSI standards, current and risk management, and the business of diving.
5. Day5
   Theory & rescue assessment

   Complete dive-theory exams and rescue scenarios to instructor standard.
6. Day6
   Evaluation & exam

   Final teaching evaluations and the SSI instructor written examination.
