Course overview

Step up from guiding to teaching with the SSI Open Water Instructor Training Course in Fiji, based on the Pacific Harbour and Beqa Lagoon coast. Candidates rehearse academic, pool and open-water teaching presentations on warm soft-coral sites, then sit the SSI Instructor Evaluation to earn the rating that lets you certify SSI divers worldwide. Fiji's settled 24-30C water and shark-rich reefs make a forgiving setting for your first teaching reps.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver SSI academic, pool and open-water teaching presentations
• Apply the SSI training system, standards and Total Diving philosophy
• Demonstrate and evaluate student skills to instructor standard
• Manage student-diver risk on reef and shark-dive sites
• Complete dive-theory and rescue assessments for the Instructor Evaluation
• Use SSI's digital training platform to deliver and track student progress

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Dive Guide / Divemaster or equivalent leadership rating from another agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• Minimum logged dives per SSI ITC standards (around 75 to begin, 100 to certify)
• Current first-aid and CPR / oxygen-provider training
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Orientation to the SSI training system and your first academic teaching presentations.
2. Day2
   Pool workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching skills in confined water before you reach open-water sites.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Run open-water teaching presentations on Beqa's soft-coral pinnacles under evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & risk management

   Cover SSI standards, risk management and the business of running courses.
5. Day5
   Theory & rescue assessment

   Complete dive-theory exams and the rescue assessment to ITC standard.
6. Day6
   Instructor Evaluation prep

   Mock evaluations and presentation polishing ahead of the SSI Instructor Evaluation.
