Course overview

Step up from divemaster to teaching professional with the SSI Open Water Instructor programme in Komodo, training where reading currents and tides is part of daily diving. You rehearse teaching presentations in sheltered bays, then apply real-world judgement on the National Park's seamounts and manta sites. The Instructor Training Course ends with you ready for the SSI Instructor Evaluation, and you earn an SSI Open Water Instructor rating in one of Indonesia's most current-rich classrooms.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver academic, pool and open-water teaching presentations the SSI way
• Apply the SSI training system, standards and total-diving philosophy
• Demonstrate and correct student skills to instructor standard
• Plan and supervise student dives around Komodo's tidal currents
• Run rescue scenarios and assess dive theory to ITC level
• Prepare for the independent SSI Instructor Evaluation

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Dive Guide or a qualifying leadership rating from another recognised agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• Logged dives meeting SSI Instructor Training requirements (typically 75 or more)
• Current CPR, first-aid and oxygen-provider training
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Orientation to the SSI training system and your first academic teaching presentations.
2. Day2
   Pool teaching workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching core skills in calm, controlled water.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Deliver open-water teaching circuits on gentler park reefs under trainer evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards and risk management

   Cover SSI standards, current and tide planning, and the business of diving.
5. Day5
   Theory and rescue assessment

   Sit the dive-theory exams and complete the rescue assessment to ITC standard.
6. Day6
   Evaluation preparation

   Mock presentations and a full briefing for the independent SSI Instructor Evaluation.
