Stocky reef predators. The shark you want to dive with a guide for.
Bull sharks are stocky, powerful reef predators with the rare ability to tolerate fresh water; they've been recorded hundreds of miles up rivers. On reefs they're ambush hunters; populations are recovering in some regions and declining in others.
Encounter destinations are specific: Beqa (Fiji), Cabo Pulmo (Mexico), Protea Banks (South Africa). Closer to India, certain Maldives atoll sites produce occasional bull-shark sightings. They're not on every reef, so plan a trip specifically for them.
They're less predictable than reef sharks: always dive with a guide, never wear shiny jewellery, and never dive at dawn or dusk when they're actively hunting.
